Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the awareness of health, discomfort, the self-care, the family support and the difficulties of antenatal care in order to identify nursing problems in pregnant women. A convenience sample of 132 pregnant women who were attended to the class of the preparing childbirth for two-hour was used.
The data collected by the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multiple regression.
The findings are as follows :
1. The pregnant women recognized that health is absence of disease and mental illness or psychological and physical comfort. Taking care of family was of great value to them in their health.
2. They complained of physical discomfort such as backache, lower leg edema, fatigue, breathing difficulty and sleeplessness and then additionally they concerned fetal growth, their activities of daily life, and their changing appearance.
3. The family of pregnant women supported them to control their health during antenatal self-care such as diet, rest, exercise, and medication etc.
4. The difficulties of antenatal care were unkindness of medical personnel and lack of information about antenatal care form referents.
5. Unwanted pregnancy, lack of health awareness, knowledge deficit about antenatal care, and need of family support listed as the nursing problems.
Antenatal educational program for promoting competence for self-care should be operated by the maternity nurse practitioner or nurse-midwife in the antenatal clinic for the pregnant women and their family.
